Organic agriculture and food in Malaysia

I consume organic food, and so does my wife, especially during her pregnancy with our son, Zachary. However, my mom does not eat organic food – ever. She claims organic food actually makes us sicker not healthier. And she got this idea from her medical doctor.

Are organic agriculture and food healthier and better? What does science say? (photo from bioeworld.blogspot.com)

What surprises me is the issue of organic food has inadvertently become like a religion to some people. Some believe in organic food fervently because they believe organic food are healthier, more environmentally friendly, and more socially responsible than conventional food. In contrast, non-believers not only mistrust organic food but also vehemently call them a fraud and people who believe in organic food as fools and being conned into parting their money.

So, are organic food good for you or not?

What does science say about the benefits of organic agriculture and food?

Organic food is produced from a system of food production that does not use any: synthetic agrochemicals (such as fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides), hormones (such as growth hormones), antibiotics, food additives, GM (genetically-modified) crops and animals, and feed derived from GM sources. Organic farming encompass four key principles:

  1. Health – health of soil, plant, animal, humans, and environment must be sustained or enhanced
  2. Ecology – farming practices based on living ecological systems and cycles and to work with them, emulate them and help to sustain them
  3. Fairness – practices that are fair to life opportunities
  4. Care – practices that are based on precautionary and responsible manner to protect the current and future generations and the environment

In other words, organic farming stresses heavily on emulating or working with natural systems, care of human health and the environment and life in it, as well as being a socially responsible system.

Consequently, it is no surprise that some people might find organic agriculture’s “back-to-nature” and human health principles appealing. Nonetheless, the issue of organics is increasingly becoming polarized. At one corner you have proponents and the other corner opponents, each putting forth scientific arguments arguing for and against organic agriculture and food.

As Prof. James McWilliams at Texas State University remarked, “We draw these bright lines between organic and conventional food, but science doesn’t draw those lines. They crisscross, and you have people on both sides of the argument cherry-picking their data.”

“The real cost of organic food” by Jeffrey Kluger (Time, Sept. 6, 2010) (photo from time.com)

I read with interest the Time article (Sept. 6, 2010) “The real cost of organic food” by Jeffrey Kluger. The article argues that although organic food are more expensive (no surprise there), organic food carry lower risk of health problems because no pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones are used. Moreover, in some cases, organic food carry slightly more micronutrients than conventional food. Cattle raised on grass (cattle’s natural food), as opposed to cattle raised on cereals (cereals are not cattle’s natural diet), have a higher ratio or omega-3 acids which could reduce risk of cancer or heart disease. Grass-fed cattle also have lower risk of E. coli (a dangerous bacterium) transmission because of reduced crowding as compared to grain-fed cattle that are often kept close together to one another in cattle pens or barns 24/7/365.

And then there is a matter of taste between tomatoes grown organically and conventionally. The taste of conventional tomatoes that are genetically engineered to ripen slower can never match the taste of natural tomatoes. Taste the two types yourself. And as any good chef would tell you: they would never use any tomatoes bought from supermarkets in their kitchens.

However, recent scientific evidence point to the importance of not being overly passionate on organic agriculture. Here are some recent findings:

  1. It is difficult to meet world food demand by using only organic agriculture. It is well known that crop yields from organic farms are lower than those in conventional farms, in particular during the early years of farming. Nonetheless, long-term projections still show that crop yields from organic farms could be as much as 40 to 50% lower than those in conventional farms. A 40% yield reduction in developed countries would require 67% more agriculture land to produce the same amount of crops. Consequently, this puts more, not less, pressure on land use if the world would fully adopt organic agriculture.
  2. There are strict regulations in place, in particular by developed countries, on pesticide residue levels in food. Regular food safety check ensures pesticide levels in food remain below threshold levels. Ironically, food grown organically could contain more plant toxins than food grown conventionally. When no pesticides are used in organic farms, crops face higher stress level from attacks by pests and diseases. And as a defense mechanism akin to antibodies inside a human body, the plants would protect themselves against damage by producing natural defense chemical compounds, called plant secondary metabolites. These secondary metabolites are however toxins and could harm human health.
  3. Long-term field experiments have shown organic farms applying organic manures show higher nitrogen pollution than from conventional farms. Pollution from fertilizers can be reduced provided fertilizers are applied at the quantity and at the time when the plant requires them. In other words, if we could apply fertilizers to match the timing and quantity of plant requirement, fertilizer loses and pollution would be minimized. This kind of matching can be more easily done using conventional fertilizers. Natural fertilizers like animal manures cause higher fertilizer pollution because the delivery of nutrients is not synchronized with crop nutrient demand.
  4. Organic farming are also not able to sequester (that is, help to store) more carbon in the soil because, as stated earlier, organic farms typically have lower crop yields; thus, lower amount of carbon are stored in the soil. It was calculated that if all cereal crops in Sweden were to be grown organically, it would result in a loss of soil carbon, equivalent to an average annual CO2 emission by 675,000 Swedish cars. As a side note: CO2 is a greenhouse gas, its excessive amounts in the atmosphere are currently causing detrimental global warming and climate change.

Finally, one notable negative of organic agriculture is its high labour requirement. Organic farms require more manual labour than conventional farms because pest, disease, and weed controls are done manually, without resorting to any chemical spraying, in organic farms. Labour shortage are an acute and serious problem in many developed and some developing countries. Most organic farms in Malaysia are small between 0.8 and 4 ha partly because of Malaysia’s persistent and long-term labour shortage problem.

Organic agriculture is an important type of agriculture farming. Scientific evidence currently show that the issues of organic agriculture and organic food are not clear cut as proponents and opponents of organics would like to have us think. The evidence instead point to both the good and bad of organics.

Cuba: A sustainable agriculture revolution to teach the world

Perhaps the story about the organic revolution in Cuba would be helpful to us contemplating about organic agriculture.

Cuba is a country about 600 km from Miami, USA or over 17,000 km from Malaysia. In the late 1989, Cuba’s closest allies and trading partners, the Soviet Union and the socialist block in Eastern Europe, collapsed. Almost overnight, Cuba lost more than 80 per cent of its imports. Oil and trade embargo on Cuba further destroyed her economy and agriculture. There was little fuel for the tractors, little fertilizers, little pesticides, and few spare parts for farm machinery. Cuba was not only facing economic ruin but also a major food crisis.

The calorie intake per person in Cuba fell from 3,004 calories a day in 1989 to only 2,323 calories a day in 1993. But today, Cuba has an average calorie intake per person of 3,547 calories per day, which is even higher than that in 1989 and higher than what the US government recommends for US citizens.

So what happened in Cuba?

Facing no possibility of importing food, fuels, or agrochemicals, Cuba had to reinvent her agriculture to one that is more self-reliant, based on sustainable agriculture practices of requiring low external inputs.

Many more key reforms were done, such as by introducing urban agriculture. Cuba’s vacant urban lots are transformed into “organoponicas” for growing food crops organically without any pesticides and agrochemicals. Nearly all of vegetables and fruits in Cuba are grown organically, and Cuba is today 80 per cent self-sufficient in vegetables and fruits.

Cuba’s agriculture reinvention shows that sustainable agriculture does work and organic agriculture can feed an entire nation (photo from thecroft.wordpress.com)

So successful is the organic farming in Cuba that Oxfam International called Cuba “the largest experiment in sustainable agriculture”.

Cuba has much to teach us all. Cuba is different from other countries, of course. For one, Cuba enjoys plenty of labour to work the organic farms. But Cuba remains a very good example that the principles of low-input sustainable agriculture can work and that organic farming can feed a nation, provided there is enough effort and motivation to make it successful.

Organic agriculture development in Malaysia

Over in Malaysia, organic agriculture has a relatively young and less spectacular history. The development of organic farming  followed two concurrent paths, one led by the NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and the other by the private sector.

One NGO that played an pioneering and prominent role is CETDEM (Centre for Environment, Technology and Development, Malaysia) who became wary of conventional agriculture practices, in particular over issues on environment degradation, health of plantation workers from pesticide use, food safety, and low external sustainable agriculture. In 1987, CETDEM realigned itself to follow the organic movement.

However, it was only in the 1990s that many pioneering organic farms were established such as the organic farms in Penang and Kuantan, Sustainable Living Centre in Gopeng, Perak, Lifestyle farmhouse in Melaka, Ecofarm in Rompin, Negeri Sembilan, and Nakim Farm in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

The early consumers of organic food in Malaysia were the health conscious group, typically those who were suffering from cancer or some degenerative disorders.  The other group of organic food consumers were Buddhist vegetarians.  However, nearly (98 per cent) all organic food consumers in Malaysia were the Chinese.

Organic food was a niche market in Malaysia then. Normal retailers and supermarkets, for instance, did not carry organic food. Consequently, some people took the initiative to setup informal, home-based distribution centers to help to obtain and sell organic food. These informal, home-based distributors were run by people who themselves followed natural or alternative health systems and diets.

A major milestone in organic food development in Malaysia occurred when Steven Leong established a manufacturing facility to produce organic compost and fertilizer, the first in Malaysia. It was only when organic fertilizers and compost could be supplied in bulk and in steady supply could organic farms be more firmly established and produce higher yields in Malaysia.

In 1995, Premier Organic Produce, the first organic marketing organization, was co-established by Steven Leong. Premier Organic Produce was the first dedicated commercial wholesaler of a wide variety of organic produce (mainly vegetables) and with comparative quality with conventional produce.

Today, organic food still remains a niche market, but one that is growing rapidly. In 2001, for instance, only 131 hectares (ha) in Malaysia were organic farms. In just a span of five years, the land area for organic farms grew by an incredible 18 times to 2,367 ha, of which 962 ha are perhaps certified organic, as surveyed by the Swiss Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the Foundation Ecology & Farming (SOEL), Germany, in 2007.

Zenxin at Kluang, Johor is the largest organic farm and the leading retailer and distributor of organic food in Malaysia (photo from www.freshplaza.com)

Compared to other countries in the region, Malaysians are among the most knowledgeable in organic food and their health benefits. While the Chinese still remain the major consumers of organic food in Malaysia, the younger Chinese generation (mid-thirties and forties) have started to take a keen interest in organic food, unlike in the past where it was mostly the older Chinese generation. Other races such as the Malays and Indians have also started to try organic food, although their numbers still make up a small fraction of Malaysian consumers.

Starting from 1999, family-run organic shops started to emerge in the Klang Valley and in other major towns in Malaysia. However, the growth of family-run organic shops have been short-lived. Since 2006, very few family-run organic shops have opened. Instead, their roles have been taken over by big retailers like Cold Storage, Jusco Supermarket, Tesco, Giant, and Carrefour. All large supermarkets in Malaysia now carry certified organic food in large quantities and varieties. Smaller and more upscale supermarkets like Mercato, Isetan Supermarket, and Village Grocer also stock certified organic food.

Selina Gan, Managing Director of the leading organic food retailer, Country Farm Organics, in Malaysia (photo from everworks.net)

The hub of vegetable farming in Malaysia can be found in Cameron Highlands. Grace Cup Sdn. Bhd. and Cameron Organic Produce Sdn. Bhd. (established by Lee Ong Sing in 1997) have established organic vegetable farms in Cameron Highlands. Large local organic retailers such as Country Farm Organics and Zenxin have established a foothold in distributing and selling organic food to consumers.

Nonetheless, organic agriculture and food are facing several challenges in Malaysia. Although the demand for organic food in Malaysia is growing, the supply of local organic produce is not keeping up with the increased demand. Local supply can fall by as much as 50 per cent in certain periods of the year. Beside the inconsistent supply, the varieties of local organic food are also limited. Consequently, Malaysia still needs to heavily import organic produce from other countries, especially from Australia, U.S., and New Zealand.

Another problem facing organic food consumers in Malaysia is the price difference between organic and conventional food. Although it is well known that organic food is more expensive than conventional food, their price difference in Malaysia is particularly substantial, by as much as 100 to 300 per cent, compared to only 25 to 30% price gap in the U.S. and E.U.

Despite the higher price and limited variety of organic food in Malaysia, I foresee that organic agriculture and food would continue to rise rapidly in Malaysia as Malaysians become more health and environmentally aware.

Malaysia telemarketer phone numbers: List of numbers to block and avoid

Update (15 Mar. 2017): Thank you, contributors. Keep those nuisance numbers coming in!

TIP: Please use your web browser’s search/find function (not this website’s Search) to search for your phone numbers. You can do a full or partial search.

You have been there before. You are in a middle of work or in a middle of a conversation when your handphone rings. You answer the call, and the voice at the other end says, “Good day! You have been selected from our list to enjoy our special discount….

Yes, it is one of those irritating telemarketers. They are pushy, aggressive, relentless, and bordering on scammers. Moreover, they work as a team, so one day it might be a guy called “Azli” and the next time, it would be someone else called “Sharon” trying to push through a sale, be it a personal bank loan, a service upgrade, credit card, insurance, or time share.

Fortunately, we can take back our handphones. Smartphones have apps that can block phone calls and even text messages. We essentially enter phone numbers we wish to block, and if a call matches the blocked list, the smartphone app blocks the call by picking up the call, then hanging up. Most blocking apps can even work with partial phone numbers.

Unfortunately, finding a list of telemarketing numbers is difficult. There are some websites like whocallsme.com, operating like a forum, that we can use to check if a number belonged to a telemarketer. But we have to know the phone number first, then check the number. In short, there is no recent and dependable website that has a list of telemarketer numbers which we can copy and paste into our phone blocking app. I managed to find only one website that has a list of Malaysian telemarketer numbers, but that site has not been updated since 2009.

Consequently, I thought it might be a good idea if I start a site (this blog) where people contribute known and confirmed phone numbers that belong to telemarketers, as well as scammers and spammers.

Here are list of phone numbers of telemarketers, scammers, and spammers. Please post a comment or contact me (using the Contact option in this blog) to contribute more phone numbers into this list. I will credit you unless you tell me specifically not to do so.

I am grateful to the original blogger who maintained the list of telemarketer numbers, and I have added that original list into my list below.

Petronas vs Shell vs BHP vs Esso: Which petrol brand gives the lowest (best) fuel consumption?

After more than one and a half years of measurements, I report my latest results here.

Do petrol brands matter? Would filling up our cars’ petrol tank with a particular petrol brand, for example, make any difference to our cars’ fuel consumption (FC)? It pays to ask this question especially when fuel prices are on a persistent and upward trend.

Malaysia's own oil company, Petronas. Does it gives the best car fuel consumption? (photo from apiz927.blogspot.com)

I checked some local car forums on the net to determine what the Malaysian car enthusiasts are saying on this issue. It appears everyone there has an opinion or stance on the “best” petrol brand. Some say Shell – but an equal number of people would instead swear on Esso, others on BHP, and yet others on Petronas. In other words, take your pick.

Judging from the typical long queue of cars at Shell and Petronas fuel pumps, it appears that Shell and Petronas are the two most popular petrol brands in Malaysia. In sharp contrast, Esso and BHP petrol stations often have lesser cars. So could it be that Malaysians have somehow worked out that Petronas and Shell are the two best (i.e., most fuel efficient) petrol brands? Is this an example collective or crowd wisdom in action?

Ultimately, I was going to have my own car test to answer this question. For six months from Oct. 2010 to Mar 2011, I monitored my car’s fuel consumption (FC) based on four major petrol brands in Malaysia: Shell, Petronas, Esso, and BHP. I did not pick Caltex because its stations were few and far between at my home and work place.

First: some background information on my little experiment:

  • Test car: Nissan Grand Livina (year 2010) 1.6 Manual
  • Car driven mostly by me (about 95% of the time and 5% by my wife)
  • Car typically carrying one to three passengers (including driver)
  • Car not modified in any way and no fuel additives were used during tests
  • Petrol type RON95 was always used (never RON97)

At the end of the six months, my average car’s FC was 7.95 L per 100 km (or equivalent to 12.67 km per L or 29.80 miles per gallon). At the current petrol price, this works out to 15 cents per kilometer. The average distance I travelled in my car was 94.63 km per day (which works outs to RM14.24 spent per day on petrol).

Fig. 1 below shows the average FC based on the four petrol brands. Looking merely at the average values, Petronas had the lowest (i.e., best) FC of 7.81 L per 100 km, followed by Shell (7.88 L per 100 km), BHP (8.03 km per 100 km), and lastly, the highest (i.e., worst) FC was by Esso (8.07 km per 100 km).

Fig. 1. Average fuel consumption (FC) based on four petrol brands

However, the standard error bars (those vertical lines on the top of each bar) tell a different story. Although Petronas had the lowest average, its standard error bar was the largest. In more technical terms, a long error bar denotes high variation (e.g., greater uncertainty) in the readings. In contrast, a short error bar denotes the readings are more similar to one another. The standard error bars for the four petrol brands covered about the same range of FC values. Consequently, we can regard that the four petrol brands give more or less the same FC.

But what were causing these variations in FC readings? It is well known that FC is affected by many factors, two of which are the road conditions and road traffic. Fig. 2 below shows that the farther I travelled in a day, my car’s FC would increasingly improve (i.e., FC become increasingly lower).

Fig. 2. Fuel consumption (FC) would decrease with increasing average distance travelled in a day

This trend in FC makes sense. The farther I travelled per day often meant I was driving more on the highway roads. Travelling on highway roads often lowers a car’s FC because of the lesser road traffic and better road conditions. In contrast, travelling more on the so-called city roads would often increase a car’s FC because of the increased road traffic and more tortuous (intricate) routes. Fig. 2 shows that for every 10 km more I travelled in a day, my car’s FC would fall (improve) by about 0.2 L per 100 km.

Most interestingly, the following four charts (Fig. 3) show that there were some FC differences between the four petrol brands when they were plotted against the average daily distance travelled.

Fig. 3. How the fuel consumption (FC) of four petrol brands would decrease with increasing average distance travelled in a day

All petrol brands, except Shell, showed that the farther I travelled in a day, my car’s FC would fall (improve). But, crucially, how much my car’s FC would fall with distance travelled would depend on the petrol brand.

Combining all the four above charts (and removing the scatter points to improve chart clarity) into one chart improves interpretation.

Fig. 4. Summary of the fuel consumption (FC) of four petrol brands

Fig.4 reveals two petrol brands have contrasting trends on my car’s FC: Shell and Petronas. Unlike the other three petrol brands, Shell (green line) showed a near horizontal (flat) line. This means that travelling using Shell would not improve my car’s FC regardless whether I travelled far or near in a day, remaining rather constant at 7.88 km per 100 km. Petronas (black line) had the steepest slope which meant that Petronas had the largest effect on my car’s FC depending on average distance travelled per day.

For short travelling distances (about less than 100 km per day), Shell had the lowest (best) average FC compared to the other three petrol brands. In contrast, Petronas (black line) had the highest (worst) average FC for short travelling distances.

However, for large travelling distances (about more than 100 km per day), Petronas had now the lowest (best) average FC. In contrast, Shell would instead have the highest (worst) average FC for large travelling distances.

Esso (red line) and BHP (blue line) are of less interest here since their trends are between that for Shell and Petronas.

Fig. 4 confirms that there were differences between the petrol brands on my car’s FC. However, in the long run, these differences did not matter. As mentioned earlier, the average distance I travelled in a day was 94.63 km. This average distance is shown in Fig. 4 as the vertical dashed red line. Observe that this dashed red line intersects the four petrol brand lines at nearly the same point or location. This means that for the average distance I travelled in a day (over a period of six months), there was little differences between the four petrol brands on my car’s FC. In other words, in the long run, it did not matter what petrol brand I used; my car’s FC would not be affected by the petrol brands.

Conclusion

The results from my ‘experiment” did confirm my initial belief that there is little differences between petrol brands. For the distance I normally travel in a day (about 95 km per day), this belief is verified. At this distance, there is little difference between petrol brands.

However, unexpectedly, different petrol brands would give a different FC depending on the distance travelled. The results showed that for the lowest FC, Shell is most suitable for city driving (e.g., roads with heavy traffic) but Petronas is most suited for highway driving (e.g., outstation driving).

So perhaps Malaysians do have it right on the best petrol brands (Shell and Petronas) to use for their cars.

Caveat

I am under no illusion that my “experiment” is any way a rigorous scientific experiment. To qualify as one, I would need, among others, more than just one car (at least twelve Nissan Grand Livinas!) and more than one driver (and the drivers would have to be kept from knowing what petrol brand they are using).

Nonetheless, I believe there is some legitimacy in my “experimental” results. Using another car model (other than Nissan Grand Livina) or travelling on other routes would of course obtain a different set of FC values by the four petrol brands. However, I believe the trend as observed in this “experiment” would remain stable: that Shell is the best petrol for city driving and Petronas for highway driving.

Possibility of electricity from wind energy in Malaysia: Some rough calculations

Update (10 Apr. 2013): This article was used as a source of reference in the New Straits Times article “Getting wind of the situation” (pg. 7, Green Technology section, April 9, 2013) by Gregory Basil.

Is it possible to harness the wind energy on a large-scale basis to generate electricity in Malaysia? Malaysia’s mean annual wind speed is low at no more than 2 m/s. Nonetheless, the wind does not blow uniformly throughout Malaysia; wind speed varies according to region and month.

What’s the future for wind energy in Malaysia? (photo from pkukmweb.ukm.my/~jkas)

Malaysia experiences two main weather seasons: southwest monsoon (May/June to September) and northeast monsoon (November to March). Wind speeds during the southwest monsoon are often below 7 m/s, but during the northeast monsoon, wind speeds could reach up to 15 m/s particularly in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Moreover, during April to September, the effects from typhoons striking neighbouring countries (such as Philippines) may cause strong winds (even exceeding 10 m/s) to Sabah and Sarawak.

So although Malaysia, as a whole, experiences low wind speeds, some areas in this country see strong winds during certain periods of the year.

I requested the wind speed data for 14 towns from all over Malaysia from the Malaysian Department of Meteorology. These data were from 1989 to 2008 (20 years), and in addition to them, I included the wind speed for Serdang, the town where my university main campus is located. For Serdang, the wind speed data were from 1985 to 2007 (23 years). All wind speeds were typically measured 2 meters above the ground.

From my analyses, Malaysia experiences stronger winds in the early and late parts of the year. On the whole, Malaysia’s mean annual wind speed is 1.8 m/s. However, towns in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia such as Mersing, Kota Baharu, and Kuala Terengganu experience stronger winds. For these places, their mean monthly wind speed could exceed 3 m/s. East Malaysian towns, Kota Kinabalu and Labuan (with the exception of Kuching) also see stronger wind speeds than the national average.

Mean monthly wind speed for several towns in Malaysia, 1989-2008. Mean annual wind speed of a given town in brackets (1 of 2)

Mean monthly wind speed for several towns in Malaysia, 1989-2008. Mean annual wind speed of a given town in brackets (2 of 2)

Okay, let’s round up the mean wind speed of Malaysia to 2 m/s. This is the national average of wind speed at 2 m height above ground. Roughly, doubling the height increases wind speed by 10%. Since a typical wind turbine is 32 m above ground, this means the average wind speed at the height of 32 m above ground increases to nearly 3 m/s.

The energy per square meter area of a wind turbine is determined as:

0.5 x air density (kg per cubic meter) x wind speed x wind speed x wind speed

Note that wind speed (m/s) is cubed (multiplied by itself thrice). Using the aforementioned equation and taking air density as 1.3 kg per cubic meter and mean wind speed as 3 m/s give the energy per square meter area of a wind turbine as 17.55 W.

The diameter (d) of a typical wind turbine is 25 m, so the circular area of a wind turbine is:

3.142 x 0.25 x d x d = 491 square meter

Hence, the total power generated from a single windmill is:

17.55 W per square meter x 491 square meter = 8,617 W

However, the efficiency of windmills is not 100% but typically only about 50%. This means the actual total power generated from a single windmill (i.e., after correcting for inefficiency) is half of 8,617 W or 4,309 W.

Now let’s determine the power that could be generated from a square meter of land area occupied by windmills. Windmills cannot be placed too closely to each other. Doing so would cause one windmill to slow down the wind speed for another windmill. But placing windmills too far from each other wastes land area. Typically, windmills are placed no less than five times their turbine diameter without losing power. Hence, the power that could be generated by windmills per unit land area is

power per windmill (W) / land area per windmill (square meter)

or

4,309 W / [(5 x 25 m) x (5 x 25 m)] = 0.28 W per square meter land area

Recall that the diameter of a typical wind turbine is 25 m and two adjacent windmills are placed apart by five times their turbine diameter.

Windmills typically require a minimum wind speed of between 3 to 5 m/s to generate electricity. This means there would be periods of too low wind speeds for the windmills to generate electricity. Periods in a day with enough wind speed for the windmills to generate electricity is called “load factor” or “capacity factor”. So, what is the load factor for windmills in Malaysia on the whole?

In calm weather, the typical wind speed distribution in a day can be depicted as below.

Idealized daily wind speed distribution in Malaysia

Wind speed is higher during the day (from sunrise to sunset) than that during periods before sunrise and after sunset. Wind speed follows a sine curve during the day, and it remains constant for periods before sunrise and after sunset.  I am going to roughly estimate Malaysia’s load factor by assuming that maximum wind speed is twice the daily average wind speed and that the average wind speed during the day is also twice that during early morning and night.

Consequently, the period when wind speed exceeds 3 m/s, which is required for windmills to generate electricity, is calculated to be from 8:45 to 17:15 hours. This is a duration of 6.5 hours or a load factor of 27% where windmills are able to harness the wind for electricity generation.

Thus, the power that could be generated by windmills per unit land area is 27% of 0.28W, which is 0.0756 W per square meter land area or 1.8 Wh of electricity generated per square meter land area per day.

Malaysia’s demand in electricity by 2020 is expected to reach 124,677 GWh, so if wind power is to meet, say, 10% of this projected electricity use, the total land area of Malaysia needed for windmills is:

(124,677 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 0.1) /( 1.8 x 365) = 18,977 square kilometer

This area is equivalent to 6% of the total land area of Malaysia, or equivalent to over 1.2 million windmills to be set up.

Currently, it cost about RM1 for every 1 W of electricity generated from wind energy in Malaysia. Thus, to meet 10% of Malaysia’s electricity demand in 2020 would cost approximately RM1.4 billion to setup the required number of windmills. These figures so far show it is plausible to harness the wind energy for electricity generation in Malaysia.

Although the minimum wind speed required for windmills is between 3 to 5 m/s, the minimum wind speed for commercial viability is instead 7 m/s. None of the 15 towns I analyzed had mean monthly wind speeds exceeding even 5 m/s.

According to Tenaga Nasional, in collaboration with Argentina’s renewable energy firm, Industrias Metalurgicas Pescarmona S A (Impsa), 500 to 2000 MW worth of electricity could be generated from wind energy in Malaysia (meeting between 3.5 to 14% of the expected demand in electricity by 2020). They further reported there are areas such as the Malaysian-Thailand border which see wind speeds up to 15 m/s.

It is interesting to note that wind energy suffers contrasting problems with solar energy. Technology for solar energy is prohibitively expensive for large scale use in Malaysia. In contrast, harnessing wind energy is much cheaper than that for solar energy to set up in this country. Malaysia enjoys plenty of sunshine (as much as 3 kWh per square meter) all year round, but Malaysia sees only low wind speeds and sees high winds only at certain times of the year.

Windmills in Perhentian Island (photo from razmahwata.wordpress.com)

I believe there is certainly an avenue for using wind energy in Malaysia, but wind energy can only be used in limited areas and in certain periods only (e.g., early and late in the year). Coastal areas, especially in east Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, including small islands (such as Perhentian Island), could benefit from wind energy. But for the majority of Malaysia, the solution of large scale and uninterrupted renewable energies lies elsewhere.

Private car theft statistics in Malaysia: One stolen every 24 minutes

Update (26 Feb. 2013): My two blog articles on car security and car theft statistics in Malaysia were used in ntv7’s The Breakfast Show today (Episode 41). Go to tonton (search for the show — free registration and free viewing) to view the show’s segment on car security (at about 42:20 minutes).

Update (23 Mar. 2012): I wrote a review of some car security systems in Malaysia.

This week I traded in my 9-year old Perodua Kembara for a spanking new Nissan Grand Livina. My Kembara has served me well, but it has recurring problems with its drive shaft, couplings, and suspension. Particularly, in the past two years, new problems have started to emerge such as a mysterious oil leak (undetected even by car mechanics), increasingly rigid suspension, air-conditioning that cannot be left on for longer than two hours, creaking sounds from my drive shaft whenever I make a sharp and slow turn, peeling car tint, and a boom box that, well, doesn’t boom anymore.

Even a complete engine overhaul a year ago could not bring new life into my old Kembara.

My old Kembara also felt too small for my family, and I would become easily tired especially after long journeys because my old car didn’t seem to travel comfortably any more.

After some research, I settled on Nissan’s Grand Livina (advertised as “DRIVES LIKE A SEDAN, FITS LIKE AN MPV” – how could I resist?). So, on September 28, 2010, 1:30 pm, and without much fun fare, I bid adieu to my old Kembara and received my new Grand Livina.

One of my first concerns when I got my new car was about car security. We have all heard about the rise in car theft in Malaysia, but I was curious to exactly what the real statistics were.

However, getting detailed information about car crime statistics in Malaysia, at least from the internet, is rather scarce. I present here what data I managed to find, and by examining the trends, I did some mathematical estimations to fill in the “gaps in data” and to make some projections.

A study by ACP Amar Singh Sidhu showed that motor vehicle theft is high and rising. In 1980, motor vehicle theft comprised only 22% of the total crime cases. But this has increased to 49% in 2004. I estimate that motor vehicle theft would now make up about 74% of the total crime cases in 2009. This means that today three quarters of the crime in Malaysia would be due to vehicle theft.

And motorcycle theft is a huge percentage of the type of total motor vehicles stolen. In 2004, for example, motorcycles comprised 68% of the total motor vehicle theft, whereas private cars was 27%. The proportion of motorcycle theft shows an increasing trend. In the 2005-2009 period, motorcycles are estimated to make up 80% of all the motor vehicles stolen, and private cars 15%.

As a private car owner, what concerns me more is the statistics on stolen private cars. Surprisingly, the number of private cars stolen generally fell every year from 1980 to 1995, after which this trend reversed. Especially after 2000, the number of stolen private cars increased sharply. In 1980-1995, the average number of stolen private cars is 5,958 a year, but in 2005-2009, this figure increased by more than 3.5 times to 21,501 private cars stolen a year.

In the “honeymoon” period of 1980-1995, the number of stolen private cars fell an average of 3.2% every year, but in 2005-2009, the number of stolen private cars instead increased by an average of about 6.4% every year. This translates to a private car stolen every 24 minutes in Malaysia since 2005.

What about the recovery rates for stolen vehicles? In 2003-2004 period, the average recovery rate per year for private cars was 33.0% (motorcycles was 26.4%). This means there is a one-third chance that a stolen private car would be recovered and returned to its grateful owner.

However, the latest PIAM statistics show that the recovery rates have since fallen sharply. In the 2008-2009, the average recovery rates per year for stolen private cars and motorcycles were less than 10% and 5%, respectively! This is very alarming news for me. It means there is now less than one in a ten chance of getting back one’s stolen car.

I contacted one GPS car tracking company which fits a hidden tracking device in a car. The idea is this tracking device helps to locate the stolen car by giving out its GPS coordinates, increasing the chance of recovery. The salesman from this GPS car tracking company said that their recovery rate is 80% (although they advertised their recovery rate as 90%). No matter, either 80 or 90% is sufficiently impressive compared the national average of less than 10% for private cars. Moreover, the company’s average period of recovering a stolen vehicle is 4 days.

Since 2005, the average number of newly registered cars per year is 442,023, and the addition of new cars increases by about 7.3% per year. As stated earlier, since 2005, private car theft increases by an average of about 6.4% per year.

This means that more private cars are added to the roads per year than private cars (old and new) are stolen per year. So, the risk of having your car stolen is actually increasingly less per year simply because the number of stolen cars can’t keep up with the number of cars being added to the roads per year.

Not all cars are created equally. Some cars are more popular with thieves. Latest statistics show that local cars, Proton and Perodua, are the two most stolen cars, making up two-thirds of the type of car models stolen. More than half (52%) of the car models stolen are Proton. This dubious honour continues even to 2009, where 57% of the private cars stolen belong loyally to Proton.

Although Nissan cars are the fourth most stolen car models in Malaysia, its proportion only forms 6% of the all car models stolen. The latest PIAM statistics reveal Nissan Vannette is the most stolen Nissan model. But what about Nissan Grand Livina? The 2010 PIAM list showed none reported stolen for both 2008 and 2009! Pure joy.

At the end of this exercise, I am now more mindful about the car theft statistics in Malaysia. I also did some researching on ways to beef up car security: what works (to some extent) and what doesn’t (myths, over-hype, etc.). The web is full of advice on car security and stories about experiences of having a car stolen or nearly stolen.

So, what did I do to improve the security of my Nissan Grand Livina? Did I fix any steering lock, gear lock, brake/clutch lock, GPS car tracking system, immobilizer, motion and sound detector, anti-tilt alarm, or window security tint?

Ah, lesson number one in car security — Don’t show, don’t tell. The less people know about your security, the better.

Why only one child? RM1.1 million to raise a child in Malaysia

Updated (Aug 18, 2013): This article was used as a source of reference by New Sunday Times for their cover story, “Too expensive to have children”, pg. 12-13. I was also interviewed by the NST journalist, Tan Choe Choe.

It started in 1896 with a study entitled “Of Peculiar and Exceptional Children” by Granville Stanley Hall who claimed that children who have no siblings (only-child) as oddballs or permanent misfits. Hall went as far as to claim that “being an only child is a disease in itself.”

Describing an only-child as a “disease” is appalling and irresponsible. But is it true that only children are “overprivileged, asocial, royally autonomous … self-centered, aloof and overly intellectual,” as written by sociologist Judith Blake in her 1989 book, Family Size and Achievement?

This is the question tackled by Time magazine in their July 19, 2010 issue (vol. 176, No. 3). I read this issue with great interest because my wife (Jennifer) and I have one child too. Before we got married, I told my wife that I would like to have two children, and wife three. However, after our first child, Zachary, was born a year after our marriage, there appears an unspoken agreement between us that no more children are “in the pipeline”. In other words, we decided to shut up shop.

Our only child, Zachary Teh, aged 3

Why? Firstly, I am forty this year, and by the time Zachary goes to university, I would be sixty, probably retired and doing god-knows-what at home. Secondly, Jennifer and I are busy with our respective work and have just enough quality time with Zachary as it now stands.

The third reason has to do with how Jennifer and I see the purpose or point of our marriage. Before we got married, we agreed that our marriage should be a partnership for mutual happiness, fulfillment, security, and support, rather than treating our marriage as an opportunity to maximize our child production rate within our fertile years. In other words, the success of our marriage isn’t tied to the number of children we have, but how well my wife and I fulfill and support one another throughout our lives together. Having children (be it one or more) is a part of our lives together in marriage, rather than the point of our marriage. I think this perspective to one’s marriage is important.

At work, I have several colleagues (who are either hardwired or culturally wired to breed like rabbits) who expressed shock that I should have only one child. One has even told me that my son would feel lonely without siblings. This is a common misconception. There are many cases where siblings (even after they have grown up to be adults) who do not feel close to one another, or end up hating or fighting one another over some issues, petty or otherwise.

I can speak from experience that I never felt close to my sister even when we were growing up as kids. Today, as forty-something adults, my relationship with her is, at best, limited to a single one-minute and awkward phone call a year.

So, back to the question: Are only children misfits? In the Time magazine issue, it reports several studies done in the US that showed that there were no measurable differences in personality between only children and those who have siblings. There was, however, one important difference found between these two groups of children. Only children tend to do better in intelligence tests and achievement than non only children! In other words, there is no truth that only children are lonely, selfish, and maladjusted. Instead, only children tend to be smarter.

But why do they tend to be smarter? As Time magazine points out, there is no “dilution of resources” for only children, meaning that parents get to concentrate more attention and resources on their single child, rather than “diluting” or sharing the attention, time, money, and energy among two or more children. Time magazine ends the article by listing several famous personalities who are only children. These personalities are such as Franklin Roosevelt (former US President), Cary Grant (actor), John Updike (book author), Condoleezza Rice (former US Secretary), Frank Sinatra (singer and actor), and Lance Armstrong (seven-time Tour de France champion).

There is a fourth reason why my wife and I have only one child. It has to do with cost of raising a child from birth right until completing the tertiary education. We have all heard how expensive it is do raise a child today, but surprisingly, finding exactly how much that is in Malaysia is difficult. A search over the Internet revealed no figures for Malaysia, so I had to do some detective work myself, using figures from other countries. In Singapore, for example, the cost of raising a child is between RM400,000 to RM1.6 million, with two-thirds of the cost covering tertiary education. It is amazing to learn that two-thirds of the child’s expense (from birth until university graduation) is concentrated only on the last four years during which the child is at the university.

In US and Australia, the cost of raising a child (excluding tertiary education) were estimated at RM890,000 and RM1.1 million, respectively.

So, what about the cost of raising a child in Malaysia? Rather than working out the nitty gritty details involved in child expense, I chose a shortcut. A child’s tertiary education often bears the bulk of the total cost. In Singapore, for instance, tertiary education is, as mentioned earlier, two-thirds of the total cost of raising a child there.

Using the website, Meshio.com, I determined the cost of a four-year tertiary education in several countries (including Malaysia), then assumed that figure (education and living cost) is two-thirds of the total cost of raising a child here in Malaysia. Note that Meshio.com calculates the tuition fees as well as the living cost of doing a tertiary education, and their calculations include the mean annual increase in tuition fees per year.

The following are the cost of raising a child I calculated for a child born in 2007 (like my son who was born in April 2007):

If you want your child to study at a university in Total cost of raising a child (from birth to university)
Malaysia RM 472,491
Australia RM 1,079,215
Canada RM 900,594
Japan RM 2,054,061
New Zealand RM 993,861
USA RM 1,075,606
UK RM 1,249,091

Hence, if you are planning to send your child for an overseas education, you have to be a millionaire, as it takes an average total of RM 1.1 million to raise a child, born in 2007, in Malaysia. This average of RM 1.1 million excludes Japan, the most expensive country for overseas education. Any plans to study there would set you back a whooping RM 2.1 million, double that for other overseas countries.

Alternatively, you get a huge discount by nearly 60% if you send your child for a local education. The cost of raising a child in Malaysia for a local university education is the cheapest at about RM 473,000. But you pay a “hidden” price for a local education route: lower quality of education. As a lecturer at a local university here, I wish I could tell you that our local university education system is on par with those in US, Europe, or Japan. But the truth is it isn’t. I studied in the UK for my Ph.D., and the difference between their education system and ours is as different as night and day.

RM1.1 million to raise a child in Malaysia. This figure is certainly a sobering pause to those who are contemplating many children. But as for my wife and I, our only child, Zachary, is all we need. In him, lies all our hopes and fears.

Mom, look! Ice cream van!
